HALF-HOLIDAY QUESTION.

Per Press Association.

WELLINGTON, March 28. Yesterday a petition was lodged with the town clerk requesting that a poll be taken on the question of determining the day for the statutory weekly halfholiday in the, Wellington district. The names attached total about 2900, and it i£ a question now whether this number includes at least one-tenth of the municipal electors for the combined district. No more signatures can be added ? because the time for filing the petition has closed. The promoters, whose purpose is to secure a Saturday half-hVi-jday, urge that the assessment about *£he signatures should be made on tho basis of the names actually on the roll at the time when .the petitiqn-was sent in. However, even if this plea is granted, it is questionable whether tho required tenth has been obtained. Last year the municipal roll for Greator Wellington alone ran to over 28,000 names. It is believed the list' for' the combined district must now be somewhere near 35^000. ,
