ACCIDENT TO A CHEMICAL. ENGINE.

CHRISTCHURCH, March 11.

Shortly after 2 o'clock this morning an alarm of fire was given to the brigade. The outbreak, which was in the roof of Mr Leicester Matson's house at Merivale, was kept in check by the motor . chemical, and finally extinguished by a hand chemical without much damage being done. An accident delayed the horse chemi; cal as it was proceeding up Papanui Road. An electric car in front suddenly stopped, and an open ditch, part of the excavations for the water supply, made it impossible to turn off, and the engine crashed into the rear of the car. The pole Avent through one of the back Avindows and broke off, but no further damage was done.
