WAIMATE WEST COUNTY COUNCIL.

The first business meeting of the Council was held at Manaia last Saturday. ' The Chairman reported that he and Councillor Bridge had interviewed the hank managers to arrange for an overdraft. They got a, satisfactory answer from the Bank of New Zealand. — Action approved. Councillor McPhillips moved that the attention of the Chairman of the Elthani County Council be drawn to the fact that' at the interview between the Eltham County and the Waimate Road Board he assured the Board that, so long as he was a member of the Council he would never resort to toll-gates, that "relic of barbarism." — Carried.

The Foreman (Mr. F. Archer) reported that the principal work required was the maintenance of the metalled roads and for this a good quantity of metal was needed. He detailed the works required on several roads. The Council authorised these works except in the case of the Tnaha Road, which is under dual control at present.
