A CHINESE IMMIGRANT.
SHIPPING COMPANY'S LIABILITY
Per Press Association. DUNEDIN, Dec. 21. At the "Police Court this afternoon Robert Forbes pleaded not guilty to a charge that, being the master of the steamer Gowanburn, he did permit a Chinaman to land without fulfilling the requirements of the Immigration Restriction Act, 1908. Defendant was fined £5 Is, with costs £3 10s. A second charge was withdrawn. If this Chinaman is not re-captured the company will be responsible for the payment of the poll-tax. He left the ship at Lyttelton.
