THE HARBOUR LOAN PROPOSALS.

MEETINGS OF RATEPAYERS. The nicotine of ratepayers at Okaiawa on Thursday afternoon, convened !).\ the New Plymouth Harbour Board for the purpose of considering the proposal to raise a special loan not exceeding £300,000 in terms of the New Plymouth Harbour Empowering Act, 1908, lapsed. The -only persons present, the Star says, were Mr "W. Goodland (as Chairman), Mr J. Marx (district representative), the 1 mil-keeper and one ratepayer. The Haw era Star's correspondent telephoned on Friday that there was a. representative meeting of ratepayers in the Athenaeum Hall at Kaponga that morning to consider the proposal of the New Plymouth Harbour Board to raise a special loan of £300,000 under the New Plymouth Empowering Act. 1908. Mr May presided. Mr Marx explained the Act and stated why he opposed the Bill in the first plare. He had got what was asked for, and said he could not now see his way to oppose the measure, and recommended the ratepayers to vote for the loan, lie thought the ratepayers would be in a better position under the new loan Act than under the old one. The poll would be taken on November 10. \ Mr D. Hughes supported Mr Marx, saying he also wished to see the loan j through. He thought they weie justified in asking for a sinking fund. Mr Voullaire moved : That it be a recommendation to the ratepayers to support the New Plymouth Harbour Bill Joan.
