BABY'S BODY FOUND.
A SUSPICIOUS AFFAtILPar Press Association. . CHRISTCHURCH. .Sept. 13. The body of a male infant was found ob the bank of the Avon River ajt Burwood yesterday. It appears that ,Herbert Downes was out hunting "hares, when his dog, which was near tho bank of the river, began to bark. On going over, Downes discovered the body of a male child, lying face downward, , , I with a string round tne" yß6K."**"Tne \ body had been in the water some time. I At the inquest t6-day Constable Rowo stated that, in response to a message, he had visited the locality where the body was found. Th© string was three or four times doubled round the neck, and the end appeared as a weight had been tied to it, and had broken away.' Dr. Irving, who made a post-mortem examination, could \ not say definitely if -the child had ever lived. The body was fully developed, and newly-born, but was in a very decomposed, state, and some of the parts were missing. The string was not tight round tfio neck, though it had cut deeply into the flesh. The child had been dead too long to say whether the string iad beer :put there during life. The .child had l>een prooerly born. A verdict was returned that the body had .been found on the bank of the river, but there was no evidence to show how. it got; there.
