DAIRY REGULATIONS.

GOVERNMENT WANTS CLEAN MILK. (From Onr Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON. Sept. 11. Tito Minister of Agriculture laid a copy of the new dairy regulations on the table of the House of Representatives to-day. The Leader of the Opposition made reference to rumours that the new dairy - regulations would press heavily on - some producers, and said that he hoped i care would be taken to prevent this. t The Prime Minister said that the a Government was just as anxious as l were the farmers that the dairy industry should not only not be injured, but fc should be helped in every possible way. t The objeot of the regulations was to - place the quality of the produce beyond all question, and that was being > done upon lines that had been laid j down in the interests of the men chief- | ly concerned. JJe was surprised at some of tho rumours that had been circulated with regard to the regulations, apparently with a desire to suggest j that tho Government wanted to do something to injure the farmers. ; The Minister of Agriculture (Hon. U. McNab) said that most of tho objections to the regulations had been raised by a few men, the condition of ■ whose dairies was a disgrace to the in- , dustry, and whose produce had the ef- [ feet of depreciating the value of the butter and cheese from the factories they supplied. Not one of the difficulties that had to be encountered in the London market had anything to do with the methods of manufacture in New Zealand. The troubles were due to the filthy conditions in some of the sources of supply. The Government hoped to be able to bring up the standard of the supply to the level of that of the factories. The mass of the dairymen did not object to the regulations.
