EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS OPENED.

• By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright. LONDON, Sept. 10. The Eucha^istic Congress, was inaugurated by a. solemn service in the Cathedral in the evening. Seve/i thousand people wefe present. Cardinal Vannutelli was received in S state at the door by Archbishop Bourne and conducted under a lofty canopy of white silk and gold to the high altar. They were attended by. a procession of richly-habited cardinals and prelates. Apostolic letters were read appointing Cardinal Vannutelli Legate. Tho Pope paid a high tribute to the Empire famed for the liberty it extended to its citizens — the Empire to 4 whose authority and laws so many millions of Catholics renderea 1 faithful and dutiful obedience. •, The Legate then entered the pulpit. ' Speaking in. Latin, he -acknowledged Britain's- hospitality, and offered This expression of respect to tho wise ruler of her- destinies, and his " acknowledgments to those in authority. The Pope ho* said, trusted, good results would follow the Congress and the Divine EuchaTist be the ultimate means of uniting all in one faith. The service concluded with the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The music was that of modern English composers.
