PARADISE OF "GRAFT."
DICTATOR WHO PAID SALARIES
IN ADVANCE.
LISBON, July 14. Extraordinary allegations are being made regarding the augmentation which took place in the Civil List during the Franco Dictatorship. It is stated that in addition to the large extra sums paid to the late King, hundreds of high Governnient officials, generals, and Court dignitaries received large advances on their salaries. For example, a certain General holding an influential position at Court is alleged to have received £10,000 of his salary in advance. Another army officer recently appointed is said to bave drawn three years' salary, and then refused to take the post. A duel took place this morning between Senor Alfonso Costa, the leader of the Republican Party in Parliament, and Count Penha Garcia, and ex-Min-ister, as the result of some strong language used during the discussion in Parliament last night on the Civil List. They fought through three rounds, and Senor Costa, was slightly wounded in the arm. Although this ended the duel tho combatants refused to l><> reconciled.
