Mr W. M. Bayly, who has just returned from an extended holiday in the Old Country, was in New Plymouth to-day. An inmate of the Old People's Home Bichard McCruddon, died on Tuesday night. Deceased had reached his nine-ty-third year. He came from Australia some seven or eight yearaf ago to relatives here. He had been in the Home for the past two years and a half. The funeral took place at Te Henui cemetery yesterday afternoon^ At a meeting of the Stratford Hospital Trustees, Mr T. H. Perm was appointed secretary, vice Mr Liardet, who has left the district. Mr and Mrs W. H. Skinner leave London this week en route for New Zealand. They intend to visit Switzerland, Italy, and Greece, crossing over then to Port Said and spending about ten days in the Holy Land. Mr. G. W. S. Patterson, of Auckland, passed through New Plymouth last night on his way to Auckland. Mr. Grimwood, , chief cjerk of the"Union Steamship Company's Auckland office, was a passenger for the north by the Rarawa last night. " Mr. Jack Garry, late of New Plymouth, is a member of the orchestra of the "Humpty Dumpty Company" which plays here to-morrow. The death is announced from India, as having taken place at Quetta, in his 52nd year, of Colonel William St. Lucien Chase, V.C. He served in the Afghan war, taking part in the defence of Kandahar, and together with Private James Ashford, of the Royal Fusiliers, received the Victoria Cross in addition to the Afghan medal. The award of the Cross was — "For conspicuous gallantry on the occasion of the sortie from Kandahar, on August 16, 1880, against the village of Deb Khoja, in having rescued and carried for a distance of over 200 yards, under the fire of the enemy, a wounded soldier, Private Massey, of the Royal Fusiliers, who had taken shelter in a block-house. Several times they were compelled to rest, but they persevered in bringing him to a place of safety." Since then he had taken part in all the Indian expeditions, and was several times mentioned in despatches. Colonel Chase had only lately been promoted to the command of a brigade.
