MRS MALLINSON.

AN IMPRESSION.

Tall, magnicently proportioned, erect, standing well back on her heels, clad in a 'severf ly-eut tailor-made gown of dark blue, and with her hair drawn back from a face of true plain Danish type — such is Mrs Mallinson, nee Madame Anna Steinhauer, as she is seen on the street in tha, daytime. To the casual observer there is little of the great artiste about her. Rather she appears a middle-aged, motherly woman of much more than the average woman's physique. But what a vast difference there is when she is on the stage. Well-built as she is, and graceful too, Mrs Mallinson. has a delightful stage presence. Entirely free from affectation, and with a really charming smile parting her lips, she has tho hearts of her audience .with her even before she begins to sing. Suddenly her beautiful, voice flows out, and soon tho mind of the listener is oblivious to everything but the glorious music of voice and piano. Into the blue eyes of the singer ooines the light of the triumphant artist, over her face spreads an almost rapturous smile, and the voice of the singer ; i» full of almost all the feeling that a 1 soul is capable of. . One's thoughts revert to those beautiful lines of Keats : — "Charm'd magic casements, opening 1 on the foam Of perilous seas, in faery lands forlorn." * i . Then a 'pause. 'Presently the singer breaks into the touching little song, "Baby." Her head bends forward, and all the glorious feeling of motherhood seems to be in her voice. It is not acting. It is the soul of a great , artist laid bare.
