TARANAKI SALES.

NEWTON KING'S REPORT

Mr Newton King reports : — At Okato on Monday, 6th imfcaiu I held a clearing sale on account of Mr C. Andrews. The cows were a good lot, in fine condition, and included some fine grade Jerseys and Holsteins. Competition for these was very keen, and excellent prices were obtained. Other young cows, to calve early, sold well, but aged cows and backward calvers were not so saleable. Jersey-Holsteins made £8 to £12 10s, other kinds (August to September calvers) £5 10s to £8 15s, aged and late calvers £2 10s to £4 10s, ewes in lamb 16s 9d, breeding sows £4 to £7 2s 6d.

At Kaponga on Friday my fortnightly sale was well attended. Calves 15s to 17s, empty heifers 30s to 33s 6d, springing heifers £3 to £5, cows in calf £2 15s to £5 ss, store cows £1 10s to £2 ss, bulls £1 11s to £1 15s. Messrs Cuff Bros.' dairy realised good prices. Early calvers £6 5s to £10 10s, late and backward £4 to £6, pedigree bull £26.

The same day at Stratford I held a clearing sale on account of Messrs Cameron and Brooking. Early calvers all sold well at prices, ranging from £6 to £8 15s, backward £3 to £5, stores and aged 30s to £3 10s, heifers in calf £2 2s to £2 14s, weaners 10s. 12 to 15 months steejs 48s, -heifers 38s, Jersey bull £6. On Monday at Tututawa there was a good attendance at Mr C. Hodgkinson's clearing sale. Satisfactory prices were realised for all classes of stock. Cows to calve early made £5- 10s to £0, backward and aged £3 to £4 10s, stores 30s to 455, bulls £2 2s to £3 ss. twotooth ewes 10s sd, six-tooth to f.f.m ewes 12s Id, f.m. 4s 4d, hoggets 7s 5d to 9s Bd, harness horses £12 10s to £18. Sundries brought good prices. I also sold Mr A. W. Wood's dairy herd. $£hin was a nice lot. The cows brought

to £9 10s for early calvera, later dates £3 to £6, cows in full milk £4 i

■ ~ ..,, ♦ *•» 10s to £5 10s, pedigree Jersey cow 10$ guineas, pedigree bull 15 guineas, bull calf 6 guineas. . . The same day I held a clearing sale on the Carrington Road on account of Mr J. Shodroski. There was only a small attendance. The cows were rather low in condition and backward in appearance; consequently prices, except For a few early calvers, ruled low. Cows in milk made £2 15s to £4 10s, early calvers £5 ,to £7, late and backward £2* sb 'to £5 7s 6d, bull £5 los, sows £3 2s 6d to £3 7s 6d, store pigs 14s. At my Stratford yards on Tuesday there was a good yarding and a fair attendance, |but bidding was quiet, the counter attractions of Fleet "Week in Auckland probably accounting for tho absence of buyers. A fair number of lines were quitted at satisfactory prices •as follows: — Mixed calves 15s 6d, yearlings 15s to £1 2s, yearling steers 33s 6d, empty heifers 35s to 395, 2s-yoar steers £3 3s 6d, store cows 30s to 425, forward stores £2 6s 6d to £3 18s, fat cows £5 7s, bulls £1 Us to £2 10s. In the dairy yards early calvers made £4 5s to £6 10s, backward £2 2s 6d to £4 2s 6d. On Wednesday I held a clearing sale at Puketotara on account of Messrs W. Humphries and Sons. There was a good attendance. The cows were a good lot, but not looking too well, and absence of calving dates militated against higher prices being realised. As it was, however, early calvers met with keen competition and sold well. The horses were well competed for, especially unbroken draughts. Cows just calved £5 15s to £9, early calvers £6 to £9, backward £2 15s to £5 15s, heifers £2 to £3, two to three year old draughts unbroken £14 to £25 10s, yearling colt £8 10s, trap horses £10 to £16, sows £1 5s to £1 14s 6d, store pigs 16s 6d. At Stratford the same day I held clearing sales of dairy cattle at my yards on account of Messrs W. Clemow, P. Jackson, and W. Lovell. Early calvers were sold at £6 to £9, late and backward £3 os to £5 los, aged '37s to £2 17s 6d. On Thursday there was rather a small attendance at Mr A. Lawn's clearing sale. The cows were an excellent lot, in good condition. Early calvers sold well at £6 to £9 ss. laic £3 to £5 ss, pure-bred shorthorn bulls £13 to £14.
