WELLINGTON, April 15. Mr R. W- Holmes, Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department, who returned from the North to-day, informed a Post reporter that he was satisfied - that, if the weather .during the coming winter was not unusually bad, the North Island Main Trunk Railway would be. open for traffic at the end, of the year. He thinks the Makatote ' viaduct will be finished in two months, and that at the end of this month the gap between the railheads will be reduced to nine miles.
