GOOD FRIDAY.
NO HOLIDAY FOR TRAMWAY
WORKERS.
Per Press Association.
WELLINGTON, April 14. The City Council last week resolved, on the recommendation of the Tramways Committee, to run trams on Good Friday. Since., then the employees who are members of the union have asked the committee to re-consider the matter. They regard the Council's decision as somewhat unreasonable, and ask that it be laid down as a. general principle that Christmas Day and Good Friday shall be observed as holidays on tho trams. They also ask that the electrical engineer call for volunteers for work on Good Friday, as a good number of the employees do not desire to work. To this the engineer has made a memo.: "If we ask for volunteers, we may get no response or not sufficient men anclofficers to run the service. The. men are paid for the day's work whether they work or not. If they work they get an ordinary day's j>ay in addition." The matter being "of immediate importance, it was. brought before a special meeting of the City Council this afternoon. The engineer stated that last Good Friday the trams were run at a slight loss. The takings were £243. The Mayor said 34,000 penny tickets were issued. .The committee decided to have a "Sunday service" on Good Friday, an amendment by Councillor McLaren to, grant a full holiday being rejected. ' , •„
