Robertson, C.8., D.5.0., lately gazetted to the important post of Brigadier-General of the Aldershot Division,, adds one more to the extremely limited list of rankers who have become general officers. They can be counted on the fingers of the hands. Tho earliest recorded was that of a certain John Elley, a tanner's apprentice, who, beginning as a private in the Royal Horse Guards Blue, ended his career as a Lieutenant-General and a iv.C.B. Sir John Elley, who died in 1839, is buried in the Chapel Royal at Windsor. No other has ever succeeded in becoming a Lieutenant-General, but there have been .cases of men rising from Privates to Major-Generals . One of these Major-Generals was Luke O'Connor, V.C., who is still alive. He -enlisted in the Old 23rd Foot before the Crimean War, and rose to command tho identical regiment in which he had been a much-badgered recruit. Major-General Willie Mcßean, of the 93rd Highlanders, lived to ride at the heid of the corps in which he had once marched on foot a raw Highlander. When he joined he could neither read nor write. Major-General ' Sir Hector McDonald is another case in point. The Hope of Egmont Juvenile Temple No. 25, 1.0. G.T., held its weekly meeting in St. Mary's Hall last night.
