The report was adopted. BOROUGH ENGINEER'S REPORT. 1 The Borough Engineer reported that 'tho work in connection with the Devon Street swamp was proving much heavier tha,n hud bet>n anticipated and the ground was not by any means so good as certain of the longer residents in [tho n§ie;h)bourhood ,had predicted, being titt^ix ; offensive ana waterlogged. !if tko pEcsent fine weather continued it was intended to proceed with the jnetalKng authorised in Sforley and other streets at once. Mr Kyngdon was proceeding slowly with his Vivian Street contract. The work of forming the footpath along Bnlkeley Terrace wuh well under way. Good progress was bping'mado with tho house connections for the sewerages. AH tho plumbers and drain layers wore very full of i. ork-~-so much so that several persons were having to wait a considerable time for their jobs to be carried out. On the motion of Councillor Bellringer seconded by Councillor Browne it was resolved that the workmen, engaged at the West End swamp tunnel should be paid Is 3d per hour whilst engaged on this work ELECTRICAL ENGINEER'S REPORT. The Electrical Engineer reported: ' Powerhouse.— The load is steadily increasing and it is necessary now to run two machines every evening — the i/0 k.w. and one 45 k.w. set. The day loaU was also steadily increasing and will soon be too much for a small machine. Fitaroy. — No work has yet been done on this line as the Telegraph Department has not transferred its telephone wires. Street lamps. — None of the street lamps recently authorised have been erected as no poles are available for tlm extensions. Private lighting. — The connections to the jirivate lighting lines now number 305. The meter reading shows that Uho charges for tho past month amount to £160. Tho maximum load recorded at the power house is 139. When the line is duplicated tho loss in transmission will be reduced and this will reduce tho load at the machines; but, as we have a, number of customers coining on, there is likely to- be a very considerable increase before mid-winter. From testa that have been made it is quite evident that before long it will be necessary to arrange for larger mains or more pressure. It is also evident that within a very short period qn increase in the generating plant will be necessary, but I would advise that the question of water bo taken up at onoo. From observations taken during the dry season there appears to bo ample wa^r for a very much larger plant so far as the river was concerned, but the tunnel and pipe lines would not be equal- to much increase. ABATTOIRS REPORT. The monthly report of the Abattoir manager and also his annual report (already published,) were approved. CEMETERY COMMITTEE. The Cemetery Committee recommended that the Estimates Committee should be asked to place the sum of £50 on tho estimates for tho ensuing year for tho completion of the survey of the cemetery, also that improvements to tho value of £58 15s should be effected ■it tho cemetery. — Agreed to.
