SYDNEY WHARF STRIKE.
A SETTLEMENT. \ . PREFERENCE TO UNIONISTS GRANTED. By Electric Telegraph.— Copyright. SYDNEY, April 12. The Wharf labourers' strike is practically settled. The only point precluding a settlement on Friday night was in connection with the Merchant Service Guild. This was arranged to-day, when the agreements were signed and ratified by both parties. The coastal steamers resume running forthwith. The settlement provides that coastal companies are to carry out their agreement with the men taken on during the strike, and those formerly employed to return as opportunity offers. The Newcastle Company is to have the right to retain the present employees, provided coastal rates are paid in lieu of a weekly wage. Preference to unionists is to operate after the present employees have joined the union or left the companies' employ. The engineers agree that the coastal shipowners may man at their own discretion not more than six Steamers between; the three fleets with non-unionist engineers, not exceeding twelve ; the remainder' of the steamers to be manned solely by members of the Institute of Marine Engineers, who also have preference in future vacancies; none of the present engineers or employees to be retained after tho termination of the present agreements. The Merchant Service Guilds stipulated that all steamers now out of commission shall be manned by members of the Guild, who also are. to fill vacancies as they occur. .1?he N agreement fhegs the number of permanent hands for the wharves.
