AUCKLAND SHIPPING RETURNS.

AUCKLAND, April <9. The oversea shipping returns for the port of Auckland for the year ended March 31, as shown by the quarterly returns compiled by the Customs Department, state; that during the twelve months 261 vessels of an aggregate tonnage of 523,021, and comprising 12,317 hands, arrived at the port.- These figures show a decrease as compared with the previous twelve months, when 271 vessels, of a total tonnage of 613,706, and an aggregate crew of 16,107,•entered the port. The departures for the; pas.t twelve months were 231, representing a tonnage of 362,367 and acrew of 9893. Fpr, the, twelve months;] ended March 31, 1907, the number, was, 220, the tonnage 369,619, and the orey 12,203. The decreases that are shown by. the figures are due to. the cessation of \ the running, of the San Francisco mail boats,- .which were arriving and departing during the year 1906-7, but which have not been in commission dmv* ing the past twelve months.. The double arrival and departure of eaoh mail boat on each trip assisted materially .to swell the figures for 1906-7. Otherwise -the figures for the. past year would have shown a marked increase.
