STRATFORD.

March 27. — Members of the County Council and the Manganui Road Board were in conference on Wednesday ou tlxe question of re-adjustment of boundaricsj and the merging question naturally came up. It appears that the ratepayers lose a substantial sum in Government subsidy on rates every year by reason of the dual control, and there is probably some excessive cost of administration. The present members of the Road Board are with one exception favourable to merging on the understanding that the Beacoiisfield ,Road is treated as a main road. Mr George Sangster has consented to nomination for, -the Mayoralty. Mr Sangster is an old Councillor, with the habit of heading the poll at election? — a positon won T>y straightforwardness and common sense. He carries weight and has pleniy of stake in the district — the kind of stake that is made of olive branches. - Fourteen, I believe, is the tally. "Heavy arrivals of cheese have caused a decline in values." — So run the London market reports. We were told twelve months ago that New Zealand imports into England were so small in proportion to the whole that even if doubled they would not affect prices. At the County Council meeting a motion to raise riding foremen's wages to 10s a day, wet or fine, was lost. It was argued that 9s regularly from the Council was better than an intermittent 12s of 12s 6d from contractors. A farmer supplying the town with milk was heavily fined by the S.M. today for failing to register his dairy. He had been frequently warned. | A drilling rain did not prevent i Wirth's Circus drawing a full house on Thursday night. I believe Stratford holds a high reputation among the towns of the Dominion for diligence in the matter of circus-going.
