The Wellington Harbour Board to-, day decided to übtairi n report from its officers on the matter of providing improved facilities, for mail (and therefore passenger) connection btitSvee^n railway trains and steamers trading between Wellington and Lyttelton. The decision iv-as prompted by a letter from the Postmaster-General. ' , A long discussion took, place concerning improvementsi that i are necessary at the poft ! in connection with the entbarking awl disembarkation of passfn-. gers travelling, between the two islands. It was pointed out that this matter had now become urgent and required attention. The chairman (Mr T. M. Wilford, M.P:) stated that it might be found necessary to xeteftrict o»e portion of the wharves entirely for the use «f ferry steamers. When the North Island Trunk line was completed considerable' alteration would. bo mad© by the Railway Department, in the station arrangements.. He suggested that it might be possible to devise a scheme whereby ferry steamers tvould always be berthed at one of the new wharves to be erected near ,Pipitea Point, thus allowing arrangements to be, made, for rnnning railway trafns and city tramcars directly alongside the steamers on their arrival 'and immediately prior totheir departure. It was mentioned during the*discussion that the engineer had on many occasions prior to the development of the Board's wharfage sqheme now being carried oiit waited on ttte Government and asked for -information as to th> intentions of the Railway Department with regard to improvements which it was> obvious would have to be made sooner or Utter, but the engineer could not get any satisfaction f i*em th^e Government' on this question,, and the wharfage scheme had to proceed' with-, out regard to the requirements of the Department.
