Lloyd-George, President of the Board of Trade, to make representations to the Commonwealth Government in opposition to the proposal to increase the duty on roof slates. TIMBER DUTIES. MELBOURNE, December 5. The House of Representatives is discussing the timber duties. Mr. Thomas (New South Wales) moved an amendment that Oregon and New Zealand pine should be admitted free. The discussion is proceeding. NEW ZEALAND PINE. (Received December 6, 9.48 a.m.) i MELBOURNE, December 6. The House of Representatives fixed the duty on Oregon and New Zealand pine (undressed) for all sizes at 6d per hundred superficial feet. The Queensland members strongly opposed the free admission of New Zealand pine,' desiring to insist on the exclusive use of Queensland pine for butter boxes. Against this it was pointed out tthatt t Queensland was herself importing New Zealand pine for her own butter boxes, and"-tnat' orders placed for Queensland pine a year ago were not yet fulfilled.
