THE MEAT TRADE.
GREAT INCREASE OF EXPORTS
Tho meat exports of the colony fo; tho twelve months ending June 30th according to figures compiled by Messrs Dalgety and Co., show a very gratifying increase over those of the past season an increase of no less than 31,070 - 6991 b, the figures being : 1905-6, 207 - 595,8851 b .; 1906-7, 238,675,5841 b. There is every indication (says an exchange) that an Increase will be recorded for the current year of 1907-8, if not a 4a 4 great as that of the period just concluded, at least very little short of it While the effects of the drought ii. South Canterbury and North Otago have been disastrous on stock feed in Canterbury north of the Rangitata, ex cept in the coastal districts sheep and lambs are coming forward in unexpectedly large numbers There are also fa>'* numbers of sheep for the time of year coming into most of tho North Island freezing works. Exports at the present time are consequently much larger than was anticipated. For the current month the exports for the colony will probably reach 225,000 carcases of mutton and nearly 300,000 carcases t>f lamb, as against 180,000 and 190,000 for July of last year. The July shipments will also include some 40,000 quarters of beef. In addition to the above, large quantities of boned beef and legs and pieces of mutton will be shipped during the month.
