FOOTBALL.

STAR 11. V. GYMNASIUM CLUB.

In order to have a good practice before playing the final for the junior championship on Thursday next, Star juniors arranged a match with a team from the local Gymnasium Club. It was played yesterday. The Gymnasts won by 8 to 6.

. The game was very fast, particularly in the loose forward rushes: The Star pack was somewhat -superior, both in the line-out and scrum work. Pike, playing for the Gymnasts, was the sore point to the Blacks, for he saved on several occasions. Star kicked off, and by line and scrum work moved play into their opponents' territory. Botilton, securing from a loose forward rush, crossed the line and scored the first try. Pearce failed with the kick. Following up the kick-off, the Gymnasts worked play into the Blacks' 25, and from a forwkrd rush Muldoon scored. Ambury, with a good kick, converted. The Gymnasts returned the kick-off^ and by dint of hard graft worked play qlose to the line, and Bayly added another try. The kick at goal failed. For the remainder of the spell play was very, even. Stars opened the second with a determined attack, and soon had the Gymnasts in hot water. Hawkins, the fullback, was equal to the occasion, making no mistakes. Star continued to attack, and from a scramble on the line Nutt scored. The kick at goal again failed. For the remainder of the game Star had their opponents on the defensive, but faulty passes spoiled several good chances.

The possibility of duty coming off dried fruits in October has had the effect of making merchants anxious to quit their stocks. A line of figs advertised in this issue by Mr. C. Carter is said to be evidence of this.

The rainy season is now with us, and we ought to be very careful about getting wet. We know of no better way of avoiding the wet than to buy one of those mackintoshes "The Kash" are selling at 27s 6d. Thoroughly reliable and made in the best way from the best materials, it will pay you to look them up as early as possible, as they quickly sell out of a line like this. We forgot to mention that the usual price of these macs, was 45s. — Advt.
