THE AUCKLAND TRAMS:
1 Per Press Association. < AUCKLAND, July 25. \ \ The City Council held a special meeting to-day to consider a proposal to jamend the by-laws to allow a certain jnumber of passengers to stand in tbfe tramcars.
A deputation from the Tramways Union strongly protested against tho proposal, and the matter was eventually referred back, to Ifhe committee for re- consideration.
The Mayor -is -forwarding a letter to the Chairman «f Directors of the Electric Tramways Company, London, with reference to the friction in the matter of the running and^maftagement of the trams, notably 1 the irisiifficiency of roll-ing-stock and electric power, upon which public* feeling runs very high, Ihe Mayor asks if the company is prepared to negotiate for' the sale of the whole of its interests in the tramways o£ Auckland to a local Tramways Board t<? work the concern on behalf of the various local bocfteis interested If sp., u£on what basis can the price to be paifl be assessed? .. . '<l The Mayor estimates that forty per cent^ ol ihe shaDe^ aP;e. held in.Auc^li&id, and the British Electric Tr,actio?i Cpmpany hold the remainder.
