Reuter's San Francisco correspondent states that the small steamer San Pedro, laden with lumber, collided at midnight on Saturday, off Eureka, during a heavy fog, with the steamer Columbia (2700 tons), carrying numerous San Francisco passengers. The San Pedro struck on the port bow, tearing an immense h»le in the Columbia. The passengers hurried on deck, where a wild panic ensued. The Columbia sank in five minutes. A life raft was launched and saved a few, and eight were saved by clinging to the San Pedro. Lloyds' correspondent states that 100 were drowned, and that 200 were saved by a passing steamer. , 6ther accounts give the number lost as 150, including the Columbia's captain. One story relates that every woman perished.
