PETROLEUM.
Shares in the Taranaki Petroleum Company are hardening owing to the \ improving prospects. On Thursday last , about 300 gals, of oil was run off the Birthday Well and another 200 gals, on \ the following day. At No. 2 bore the depth is only a little" short of 2000 ft., while in No. 3 a depth of over 2200 ft. has been reached. The water, it iB believed, is shut off, and in a very short ' time the oil stratum tapped in the Birthday Well should be reached.
