NELSON TEAM IN NEW PLYMOUTH

A match between the Nelson representative hockey team and a team selected from Carrington Road, New Plymouth, and Inglewood clubs was played on the Racecourse yesterday afternoon. The local team was not as strong as that originally selected. The following represented Nelson: — Wimsettand C. Spear (backs), Croudis (five-eighths), E. Spear, J. Le Mottee .(capt.), and Taylor (halves); Hurst, Easton, Staples, Wanstall, and Anstice (forwards). The local team was: — Goal, Hudson (Carrington Road) ; backs, Bruce (Carrington Road) and Clapham (New Plymouth); halves, Ambury (New Plymouth), Turner (Inglewood), and E. ' Cutfield (New Plymouth) ; forwards, A. | McKeown (Carrington Road), Reed, M. | Avery, Fagan (New Plymouth), and i Harris (Inglewood). Play was very ragged in the first spell. Nelson showed fairly clean hitting and fielded well, but were not brilliant. Three goals were scored in this j spell by the visitors,. Hurst shooting two and Wanstall one. Towards the end of the spell the Ideals got a great rush on, and Fagan, following up intrepidly, dived headlong into the gOalJ carrying a couple of opponents witbJ him. The local team played much better in the second spell, though the hit-] ting was still weak. Nelson were placed on the defensive for the bullyoff, and soon had a goal registered against them, M. Avery scoring. F^agan made a fine .attempt to score just after this, but the goalkeeper saved smartly. Nelson were not long attacking before scoring, Hurst again putting the ball through. Shortly after this Wanstall scored the fifth goal for the Nelsonians. The local team returned to the attack and hovered about the Nelson circle for the rest of the spell. Only one addition was made to the locals' score, Harris shooting a beautiful goal from a difficult angle. The game thus ended : Nelson 5, local team 2. The Nelson team did not appear to be a great scoring combination, but showed good defence. Had the local team done more head work in and around the Nelson circle Nelson's defence would have been taxed to the utmost. Mr. G. Robertson reiereed.
