OUR TOWN CLOCK.

t (To the Editor.)

Sir, — For the first time we as citizens jf Now Plymouth rejoice in a public chiming clock, and though there may be diversity of opinion as to its power to mako itself heard amidst the hum of the busy jiart of our town, thero can be none, let us hope, as to its sweet power to help in our education. Th.' clock itself, as timekeeper, can help to teach us to bo punctual and exact in our domestic, our business, and our re ligious life • and the chimes, through tho words that Ghmtian thought attaches to them, to endeavour to be upright and just in our conduct everywhere and at all times. Some of your readers probably do not know that tho chimes of our clock have set to them some particular and very good words. I venture therefore to ask you to publish them. They are:— * At the hour (full chime) : — " Lord through this hour Be Thou our Guide And by^ Thy Power No foot shall slide.''

At the quarter, half, and three-quar-ter hour (chime) respectively tho verse is divided up into the first first and second; and the first, second, and third linos respectively. May it bo suggested that if only we would teach ourselves and our children to associate thos<« words with the chimes and so when the." round — mentally pray^ve, they, and our neighbours would surely bo the bettor for the prayer, — 1 am, etc., ' X W.G. M.
