FARMERS' UNION.

TARANAKI EXECUTIVE MEETING.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Taranaki Executive of the New Zealand Farmers' Unibn was held at Hawera on Thursday. Mr E. Maxwell presided. The Chairman, who with Mr Forsyth had attended the Colonial Conference, stated that the TJnibn had been treated fairly by the Press as a rule, but he had noticed that a great deal of the news that was circulated did not convey a fair account of what transpired. He proceeded to quote instances, and sara it emphasised the fact that the Union wanted better reporting in future, and it was practically agreed that at the next conference the Union would have its own shorthand reporter. Taranaki supplied a big share of the remits, and the result of them was satisfactory 1 . This was due to the wise selection of matter sent for consideration. As to the limitation question, most of the delegates agreed with the Taranaki representatives. Mr Boddie moved a vote of thanks to the delegate. He had no hesitation in saying that the province had been ably represented. The Union had only been in existence five of six years, and while at first it was taken no notice of there was no doubt to-day its weight was felt. He would like to see the farmers and the branches keep active, for what the Union had got was only small to what would be obtained. Be the Government of the day known by what name it might, it must regard the farmers as the mainstay of the colony. He had at times regretted spending so much time on Union business, but now he was pleased to be a member of a union doing so much good. Mr Davidson seconded, endorsing the remarks of the proposer. The motion was carried. - The President returned thanks. The President moved and Mr Allhusen seconded, "That it be impressed on the Colonial Executive that an amendment of the Industrial Conciliation Arbitration Act is urgently needed so as to at least exclude farm labourers, and the Union should use every means in its power in this direction." — Carried.

The Department of Lands and Survey (New Plymouth), replying to the seeretaiy, wrote: ''You will observe that the information to selectors that money orders to the Receiver of Land Revenue can be obtained, free of commission, is printed at the foot of the accompanying form."

In leply to the secretary, the Secretary for Defence Department wrote that the only concession made to rifle clubs was that they were allowed to purchase ammunition at the same rate as volunteers.

Mr Jones said that there would be no concession in that, as ammunition could be purchased cheaper from the factory than the Department.
