WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The heavy rain on Thursday morning compelled the committee of the North Taranaki Caledonian Society to postpone their annual fixture. The committee .found . the only pther date suitable was Friday, March 29th, and it was decided to hold the sports on that date. Fresh nominations will be received, to close on Friday next, March 22nd.

The Society's annual concert and dance was held in the evening, and was a great success. The sum taken at the door amounted to over £19. The Lily Minstrels, who. so generously came forward with, their assistance, refused even to accept travelling expenses. They were a great success. The local hits caused roars of laughter. The accompaniments were played by Misses Wilson, Pearce, and Mr Pascoe (violin.)

The second part of the programme started with a Scotch recitation by Mr Calder. • Mr Farmer followed with a couple of items, and received loud applause. The entertainment concluded with Mr Charles Thomas's ventriloquial act. A dance was held afterwards, and was largely, attended. Miss Black supplied the 'music, and Mr Ray and Miss Sampson played- extras. Messrs Klenner and: A. Kibby acted as M.C.'s. Mr J. 0. Cock supplied the refreshments.

A peculiar accident happened on Thursday* hight v Mr Thos. Wright, of Okoke,vJbjfid- the misfortune to lose a Valuable *%prse. He had just started for home from Waitara, when the animal showed signs 'of irritableness on the bridge, and just as they crossed the horse bracked, going over the bank. The occupants jumped out of the vehicle, l)ut horse and gig fell into the river. It was impossible to xender the animal any assistance, and being held down by the weight of the gig, the animal drowned" in, .a very short time. The gig was recovered in the morning.

A Maori lad,- aged 15 years, appeared' before Justices of' the Peace on Friday morning, - charged under the Juvenile Offences. Act with forging* the name of Mr J. Sarten to a cheque for £4 5s and uttering same to Mr W. F. tffewbery. Two other cheques were also 'forged — one for a similar amount, and another for £5 Is.' The' lad was remanded to appear before Mr W. G. Riddell, S.M., at Waitara, on Tuesday afternoon. Messrs G. Pearce and G. H. Stubbs, J.P.s, were on the Bench.

Mr and Mrs W. Cole, of Waihi, left on Wednesday morning for Wellington, en route to Sydney and England.. They expect to be away nine months.

The s.s. Kapiti arrived from Westport on Friday morning with a cargo of coal for the Freezing Works and Mr Stubbs.

Almost all the business places are now connected with the electric light, the

latest addition being the St. John Hall. The light there was used for the first time at the Caledonian concert on Thursday evening.
