LORDS INSIST ON THEIR AMENDMENTS.

The House of Lords, by 13S to 52, adoped Lord Lansdowne's am-endni«ni, protesting against tha H-out-e of Commons* rejection of the Lords'* amenilments -to . the I^ducatioi^ Bill en, bloc, the protest being made oh the. ground that such action was an innovation in constitutional procedure. Lord Ripon vehemently affiraned that the House of Commons' action was quite oomstitutional. Lord ' Laaxsdowne then moved that the Lords insists on their amendments, since the concessions announced bjr the Earl ci .Crewe (President of the Council) left, 1 the Bill in a shape which it was impossible to accept by their complete denial of freedom to teachers. The Government had raised innumerable obstacles to a settle-, ment.
The Earl of Crewe said hef considered -the concessions' given regarding teachers were considerable, but -the Opposition reallj' claimed -a third clause, viz., that schools -should be denominational schools. It was a mockery to ask „" Liberals -to vote money for such an ..object. (Ho warned the Opposition that never ag-airi would they receive such large con-;-cessions. The" Government refused to- ' aceei^t one 1 iota of responsvbilily for the rejection of the Bill. The noble ! Lords and' the Prelates must' bear the responsibility.
