SCHOOL ATTENDANCE.
HQTXr. GKRJIAIN REM-VRKS
, At tha annual" prize-giving cereaiony held at the, West End School on Thursday Mrs Doa-Hii^ made a few remarks, dealing more particularly with the matter of attendance. She said that first-class prizes were •/tven for full attendance, and secondclass prizes for those who- had not missed more "than ten attendances during I ' the year. The staff were of opinion that the 'attendance prizes should be encouraged, as it was found that the pupils were prepared to make sacrifices for the sake of the prizes. It might be said that the| children would attend merely for the 1 sake of the prizes ; but this habit of attendance gradually grew on the children, and the result could not fail to be in the direction of making better men and women. This year 103 prizes were . being given for attendances, the number of full attendances being .40 as against 36 during the previous year, and of these 23 were girls and 13 boys. There were 63 second-class attendance prizes, of which 40 were given to boys and 23 to girls. Those children who attended regularly got the full benefit of all lessons, and it was absolutely . necessary that some children should attend every day to j make average progress. In conclu- j sion, Mrs Dowling thanked the parents for their interest in the school. I
