Prior to tire race for the /Worthing Plate, the horse Marigold IV. collided with tfie filly Centre, unseating the jockey (H. o*. Madden). Marigold then .savagely attacked the fallen man, biting him badly on the face and neck. IMadden, who > , 'was! ' iftding Centre, states that Marigold suddenly reared, caught him by the neck, and pulled him/ off the saddle, tiben knelt over him biting savagely. Another jockey states that Marigold! kept picking up Madden and shaking him Hike a rat. Brady CMarigold's rider) jumped off and attacked Marigold with a whip, finally beating him off, otherwise Madden wouM undoubtedly have been killed. (Madden is recognised as (England's leading jockey, his position being 1 unassailable, although Lane 'and Maher run him pretty close.)
