MANGOREI.

Our Own Correspondent.)

A nuniiDer of settlers who attended a meeting at the school on the Ist inst. were much disappointed at the non-appearance of Mr Jas. Elwin, and regretted to hear that he prevented from coming by illness. A proposal by Mr J. Brown, seconded by Mr F. Oliver, that a branch of the 2s I . Z. Farmei-s' Union be formed, was' carried unanimously. Mr W. Stcphensan was elected chairman andj Mr 1).- Weils, hon. sec, and a futuire meeting of the branch was arranged early in June..

On the 2nd inst. a well a-ttended ani bucccs.-ful social was held to bid farewell to Mr J. Roagers aud family, who arc leaving the district. Mr J. Brov/n,' on behalf oi tli-e settlers, presented Mr Rodgers A\dth a v handsome buggy rug as a mark of their appreciatiion of his nrany sterlingfj'ualities. Mr Rodgers briefly thanked the donors, and a very pleasant evening was passed, enlivened by games, musical and vocal items, conclmlirjg with supper and »a hearty rendering of "Old Lang Syne."

A largely attended meeting of ratepayers was held on the 3rd inst., in the lower school shelter, shed. "Straight talk" on cross roads was the order of the day, but I am glad to report that the tan floor, chough hoofed about a bit, is tmsoiled with blood, in fact, w:th the exception of the loosening of a ittw "lead heads" in the roof of the shed, no damage of any sort occurred. The ratepayers at the "top" end are looking ■'■forward with pleasant anticipation to the v.djourned meeting, to be held in 2s cw Pljonouth, when lt lnany, if'not all/ in^. tend availing themselves '*of the generous offer of refreshmonts (liquid) made by a well-known arid Highlyrespecteci citizen, whose place, of business stands not a hundred miles from the "Imperial." This i kindly offer, interjected at a critical moment,' 'midst a hciated discussion, with the Sole object of pouring oil oh troubled waters, will long be remembered by thos.6, present as having had the happy ef; feet, of both laying the dust, and at the same time reducing a roasting ■•at-; biosphere to normal temperature.
