LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.

FRIDAY, JULY 7,

The Council met at 2.30. The Hon. W. C. Carncross resumed the debate on the Address-in-Repty. He spoke highly of the appointment of Mr Reeves as High Commissioner and approved the appointment of the Land Commission. He did not think the colony had gained by its preferential tariff all it should have done, and he thought a Select Committee should bo set up to enquire into the matter. He regretted that Taranaki farmers had not been able to give evidence before the Commission. Tlie Hon. T. Kelly urged that pressure should bo put upon the Assets Realisation Board, in order that the realisation o£ the Bank's assets should be completed. In reference to a superannuation scheme, he hoped the Governnvent would be careful that it did not hecome a burden upon the pcopio.

The Hon. J. Marshall debated upon iihe prosperity of tho colony, and claimed that it wr^ the result of tho l.Liiul for Settlement policy.
