MIMI-MOKAU ROAD.

To the Editor.

Sir,i— ln the Budget of the 13th a "Iffimi-Mokau Settler" complains of the mail contractor putting on one side tke wheels and taking to the "pack horse" on a "fafirly good road." The road, I submit, is a very bad one. The Clifton County Council has control of the road to the foot of Mr. Messenger, some six miles beyond Uruti, and the Government whence to 'AwaMno, over twenty miles. The Council has done a lot of good work on their part this last season, having unproved it greatly. It was in a very bad state, too, when they todk it over. The Government section. — the mountain especially— is in a doploraolo state. The surfacemen psut the blue papa from the side on to the centre, till tkey have made it all bait 4m|paseable. Some two years ago this puddle was cleaned off and sandstone pfut on, which considerably improved bad places. For the last eighteen months they have piled the papa on till it is in a filthy state. The matt contractor's horses are not cart horses, and with four miles of mountain covered in places with blue clay twelve inches deep, it is not surprising that he should prefer the pack-horse. I may, mention that the wheels are still going.—l am, etc. SETTLER No. 2. ilimr-Mokau Road.
