WATER AND DRAINAGE.

Reporting to tho Works Commit Ve on Thursday evening Mr Gibbon (Borough r3iigin<-er) said the contractor had not finished rendering portions of the tunnel to his '-atr-fa '- tion, but would likely oet through with the woik by Saturday. The work will then again be "tested by letting- in the water from the intake. The representatives of tho Asphalt Company have gone carefully o\er the whole surface of thq work siopping iiip all the open holes. Wjhen this had boon done the Engineer filled the reservoir and emptied it on Wednesday afternoon. lie thoroughly e\aminrd the sides and floor and found very few places required to be touched up. This would be finished by Friday night, and the chamber would be perfectly tight. Progress with the septic tank had been slow during the past fortnight partly owing to the bad weather and partly to ihe contractor not having the necessary iron work forward. As soon as this comes to hand the work will be pushed on rapidly, and in the meantime the contractor is engaged on i-he «onstruetion of the intake aud outlet cham- . bers. Tn connection with the pipe bridge over the Huatoki the contractor is engaged on the construction cf the : street girders for supporting the pipes. The casings have been finished, and arrangements have been completed for pile driving, and when the piles have been driven the walls will take but a . short time -to erect. The pipe laying has been finished in Pow'derham-stroct. and the drain opened up in Currie-street from Taranaki Hotel lane to Gill-street, but in regard .to "the latter h<( could not ' touch it till it "was definitely decided what depth the sewer is to be l.>id.
