Making New Plymouth More Attractive.

PUBLIC MEETING.

A public meeting, convened 1 y ilio Mayor, was held in the Town Hall on Friday night, for the purpose of coneidcring the question of making united action to j^rovide bettor entertainment and amusement for visitors to New Plymouth during the n.-xt Xrr?as and New Year season. The Mayor, in opening {.he proceedings, said he was sorry to see that the people who made the wont nionoy in town were conspicuous by their absence. This class of townspeople wire willing to pat him on ih* Jjtick and say "Go on Dick," and they would contributo a little if they wore asked, but they would not come io a meeting and take an active part in the work of organising and promoting altractions for the holidays. He therefore did not think it was worth while postponing the meeting to wait for this class of townsman. In r»-f erring to the subject of attractions he suggested that an exhibition -would be a popular part of a programme for Iho Jiolidaj'R. He invited suggestions from the meeting. display and promenade concert at night-, a fire ' brigades domoustmiion, and a display by the volunteers would also assist to fill in the lour days. Excursions to Moknu and Mt. Egmont could also be arranged. If these attractions were provided he was confident visitors would be attracted to the town. He moved that the programme he outlined be considered by the meeting.

Mr A. W. Wood seconded u<c motion. He said that New Plymouth should endeavour to provide better entertainment for visitors at the Xmas season.

Mp F. T. Bellringer agreed with providing 1 amusements at Xmas, Lut did not' think the programme should be fixed at this meeting. Jle l-ovod as an amendment, that a carnival bo held, and that a committee b^ appointed to bring down a r ro^ ramme.

Mr Alexander held that the woik of tho committee should also incl.ido the providing of amusement at .faster and other holiday periods. Mr Bellringer mentioned that the Star Football Club intended to hold large sports on Easter Idonday. The Mayor thought -thnr attractions could be provided during the year. He mentioned that tkv Industriul Rxhibition at the .Wanganui A. and P. Show was a great t-ttraction.

Mr Goodacre advocated the road to Mount Egmont being oiade better to allow people to get to the j-lace in comfort. Ho Was lately at .Roturoa, and if they saw the amount of money being spent by the Governm"nt H ere they would be inclined to up Mr Smith in order to : uduoe him to get some Government »nouoy for the road to Mount Egmont. )Fe was in sympathy with tho movem ;nt to make the town more attractive at, hoJ.'day time. . Mr Collis advocated making the town more attractive at holiday time. He recommended a strong committee being appointed to bring down a programme.

Mr Ewing advocated "two committees being appointed—one to manage the Xmas programme, and the other to attend to other holidays. Mr Bewley favored an Industrial Exhibition being held at Xmas. Mr Gaukrodger supported the amendment as the most 1; liiuess-like of proceeding. , The Mayor said, he favoured -an Industrial Exhibition as part of {he attractions.

Mr Bell ringer's amendment was then carried.
