A deputation from the Tarawa ki Education Board, consisting of the chairman (Mr Allsworth), Mr Jas. Wade and the secretary (Mr P. S. Whitcombe) interviewed the Right Hon. R. J. Seddon, Premier and Minister of Education, on the mail train on Tuesday, going as far as Inglewoad with him. The 'questions brought before Mr Seddon were Jhe increase of the capitation by giving the Board the extra Is 3d per head provided by law, and delays in forwarding moneys for work approved by Government and paid for by the Board in anticipation of the grant. The deputation complimented the Minister on the new syllabus, but objected to the provision for advertising the examination of schools unless the cost was delayed r-v the Department. The Minister was thanked for extending the franking privilege until the end of the financial year, and urged itg continuance in the case of Education Boards on account of the large amount of voluntary work done by memberis of the Boards and School Committees. The deputation dealt at length with tlie Board's objection to the Department insisting on the inspector visiting • and reporting on applications for new schools. The matter of the inadequacy of the building grant was enlarged on and the insufficiency of the grant for the reerection of the Uruti School, referred to. The need for requisites for the Stratford Technical School and a grant for the Technical School to be erected at New Plymouth, were also urged. In conclusion the deputation mentioned that hitherto the Taranaki Board had held aloof from Education Board conferences, on the ground that auch conferences should be invited by the Minister of Education. They urged that such a conference would be beneficial, and hoped that the "Minister would be able to see his way t o invite such a conference to discuss the whole scheme of education, as it would , they thought, be helpful to the Minister and beneficial to the Boards.

Mr Soddon, in reply, said the question of increased capitation would need an appropriation by Parliament, and he would consider the matter. Uc f would .see that the delays c o mplain>ccl of re forwarding gl'alltH ahoukl not occur again- It was not intended that the inspector should be asked to report after the Hoard had furnished full information regarding applications for now school's. The building grant this year would bo distributed on the basis laid down by the Education Committee of the House, due regard being paid to the claims of swall districts and the various circunv-

stances of the Boards, speciai cases bring considered on their merits. The other matters would be carefully gx>ne into and every consideration given to the representations of the deputation. Mr Jennings, M.H.R., who was present with the deputation, thanked the iMinistcr for the attention he had given them and the deputation withdrew.
