Sir,— Although your oorresiponfdeirfc Mr James Kenwarthy has occupied a coru'rrui ankl a quarter of your .yal'u--able apace he" has" not yet grasped- the point insisted on in my letter of last week. I stated that there ware people in England agitating for the Government to talce o ( ver the railways and added * f if they came here they woiUld be effectively cured, of- .tihis desire-, not disease. I pointed osut that w&ile the British Government provided to the utmost for the safety arid 'protection of the plublic, tiheN.Z: railways (being also the Oofvemment), ignores it. Far be it from, mo to" be "iflij^pant" over a matter of life -antel death, amd we KaN-o only to read the paragraph on page .4 of y.oiur yesterday's issue to emphasise the extrenie danger of the Defaon Street crossing-. I have yet to learn that the Government railways are so, remarkably low in their goods tariff. At least in m.y experience I have had ,to pay con-, siderably more for the , carriage of goods here than at home. Bjowever this may be, mosft people would prefer to pay a little more for the carriage of their bacon and cheese than to have tne wife px favpiunte # #üM s» legs but oft' by a' >Gover<nirfetit train passing o,ver an. tunprpleeted le-vel crossing.
