Mr Chauncey Depew, in the course of an interview published' in the St. James' Gazette, discussing Mr Chamberlain's scheme, asserted that Auieri ica recognised that every country was entitled to adopt the system most suitable to its - interests. America would not like the Canadian wheat fields built up in opposition to hers, and undoubtedly would consider some way of. striking & balance. Probably all "she > would* want by entering into a sckeme • of reciprocity would be the - de-yelopnieit-of her commerce. Her future'lay in. the exploitation of the East therefore America could not permit any Power to monopolise China, or any other part of the East. In the commercial race Britain's colonies must be. taken into account, as ■ they would develope in the future if they got men of initiative.
