On the day in question an enraged crowd of people of all ages ariid conditions, inclwling members of the middle classes, workmen, and even officials in their uniforms, attacked an,d looted iu,ost of the houses, stores, and shops in tihe town belonging to Jews, both killing and wounding many persons, among whom were a great number of women and chikl'ren.The infuriated mob threw their victims from the windows of the first, second, and even third storeys of their houses, on to the pavement below. The crowd also pillaged an-d defied the synagogues', killing the caretakers, w<h.o attenTptod to bar their way. The streets of the town wei*e cohered with a layer of down aitfl feathers from burst pillows and quilts, and strewn with broken furniture. The looters actually tore up the flooring, and destroyed stoves an<d fireplaces. What they could not carry away with them 'ihey saturated with paraffin and burned. The damage to private property is valiued at several millions of ropbles. Thousands of persons art now without shelter, clothes, or footl. A certain number of Jews succeeded in escaping the violence of the mob by having had the foresight to place RiU^sian sadrcd imlages in front of their 'doors and windows. Most of the victimls were killed or injwed by stones, pieces of the wreclked furnilmre, blocks of wood and slides, with which they wore attacked by tho riotorsi Many of the bodies were unrecognisable, as the stktill and jaws had been shattered, the nose and the teeth broken, and the eyes- driven in.
