The stono-crashcr is working its way along the Mountain Road, leaving plentiful supplies of road metal. The docking of tho Makotaxra Bridge is getting into a dangerous condition, and the chances are. a serious aeciddent will happen unless something is done shortly. The Ngatoronui Bridge is approaching completion slowly, but ilohljUomm. Kiirolv. A year will soon be gone sinro the all orations mid repairs to this bridge were begun, and it is still branded "dangerous." Methinks contract work would be to tho advantage of tho ratepayers in nn ursrent (*!) work such as, this. The removal of the tolls was effected very quietly, much more quietly, indeed, than when the Ngatoro gate was thrown into the river. Some horses still, from the long habit, pull up at the site of the gate, and move when the driver rattles some money, if ho have any. The maiority of horses, however, go through steadily, an of yore, their drivers being accustomed to call out on passant. "Pay you next time !" Various were/ the methods of getting through the gate without giving the keeper the trouble oft collecting the toll. Two friends of mine were riding through a certain gati many years ago, when one called toi the keeper—^Th is horse has boon through before " (so he had, hundreds of times) "and the other man's a
policeman" (but he wasn't). And all was peace." ' While on the subject of roads, I think something reaily should bo "done to the hair-brained youths who take such evident pleasure in scorching (ou bikes) along- the Mountain Road after dark, and lampless. If tho danger was to themselves only, it would not matter— indeed, one would almost long to hear of an accident to one of these jaests— but I know of more than ono narrow escape to foot passangors in our locality. Norfolk Road is again exporting firewood in lav^o? quantity.
