After leaving school he joined the Marines. travelling in various parts of the world. In IS7O he came to New Zealand and settled at Auckland. He was a member of the Auckland Provincial Council about I&7§, arid four years later was elected to -> Paitirtttwnti He was a member of^ the Stout-Vogel Government in I^4 for a few days, but in the same year resigned his seat anil was called to the Lec-isfative Council.
