Education Board.

The usual monthly meeting of the Board was held on Wednesday. Present : — Mr E. G. Allsworth (chairman) Mrs Dougherty, Messrs A'dlam, Faull, Mackay, McDonald, Morton, Taylor, and Wade. The architect reported that he had visited the Waitui, Lepperton, Stratford, .Cardiff, Mahoe, Rowan Road, Awatuna, Te Kin, , Pihama, and Opunake schools, and- ..detailed matters that required attention. — The report was received. Z**=*3* «■**» << The contractor for -the Punewhaka school intimated that he. could not get material carted, and the matter was left in the hands of the chairman to arrange. /With, regard to .delay in the completion of the Waiiui school contract the contractor is to be asked to state if there 19 any reason why the penalty for non-completion shoxild not be imposed. The Opunake Committee wrote asking for a subsidy towards the co^t of erecting fencing, etc. — It was decided to grant up to £10, provided the work is approved by the architect. The Durham Road Committee drew attention io the bad/ state of the chimney in the teacher's residence. — Left in the hands of the architect.

It was decided to grant the Toko Committee 20 yards of metal for re- ' pairs to the school ground ; the committee to break and lay the same. An application from the Tariki Committee for an enlargement of the school was held over, pending the , allocation of the building grant. The Stratford Committee asked that the work of asphalting the grounds, authorised sometime sirice, be carried out now as the conditions were favourable. The architect was directed to attend to the Waiter.

The Board's subsidy .towards cost' pi the Durham Road shelter shed was increased to £10. The teacher at Midhirst (Mr Reakes) applied for house allowance, on the ground tnat the school residence was unfit for habitation. Mr Reakes will be informed that house allowance will not be granted where' there is a residence, but the Board will permit him to' lease the residence if he insures H, and deposits the policy with the Board. An application for a , teacher's residence at Ratapiko was deferred till the building grant is allocated. j An application from Messrs Hints'. Bros, for a .renewal of their lease of section 8, block 5, Upper Waitara, was referred to the Reserves Committee.

The secretary was instructed to prepare a return of school sites at present unlet, and the "Lep.perton" Special Settlement (TJruti) school site was referred back to the School Sites Committee to make a recommendation to the Board.

Mr Heenan, headmaster at Opunake, wrote resigning his position. — Accepted, as from 31st pros.

Resignations were also accepted from Miss Brewer, assistant at Egmont Village, as from 28th inst., and Miss 'Black, assistant at Frankley Road, as from March 25th.

The question o£. dealing with sewing teachers' appointments was left in. the chairman's hands.

A subsidy of £5 was granted to assist the COTdiff Committee to clear the! remainder of the school ground. The quesfion of drainage was left to the architect to make a report.

A grant of £3 15/ (halt-cost) was made to the Bird Road Committee towards erection of a boundary fenco but in future application • must he made to the Board before any liabilities are accepted. The allocation of the ! building grant was referred to the Finance Committee for their report at next meeting. The chairman's report, which dealt with appointments, was received. Accounts were passed, as follows :— General £00 1/3 ; building £250 JO/8. The Board adjourned.
