Thre* men who had engaged beds the previous night are suspected. In this issue Mrs W. A meeting of persons interested in the matter of the memorial to the Taranaki troopers who have fallen in South Africa, which it is proposed to erect in St. Mary's Churchyard, are invited to attend a meeting to be held in the small room at the Town Hall on Friday .evening. We understand that a number of subscription list been returneh wHh substantial amounts, and that the success of the movement is now assured. The Blenheim Licocsing Committee had before it on Wednesday an application for a new license in Blenheim,-tin place of one lapsed at Deep Creek, 40 miles away. The circumstances were very similar to those in connection with the Hotel Commonwealth application here, opposition being shown by both temperance people and publicans. The application was granted, the Chairman and another member voting against it, and three in favour. It was intimated that an appeal would be made to the Supreme Court. - When an application for a license for n new building erected at Newtown, Wellington, catn6 before the ' üburbs Lieens ing Committee oh Wednesday. Counsel for the objectors expressed the opinion that one of the members of the Bench (Mr Cudby), who is father-in-law of the applicant, should not hear the case. The Chairman said he would leave the question to Mr Cudby, and that gentleman retired, followed by another member, who said if Mr Cndby went he would not sit. There was thus no quorum, and the matter had to be adjourned for a week. Mr Wl.W 1 .
