A 12knot breeze was blowing, but the sea. which was fairly smooth at first, grew choppy later on. Avoiding the efforts of Captain Barr, of the Columbia, to " crowd," Captain Sycamore, of the Shamrock, gained the windward berth, and also 94 seconds' start, owing to the Columbia being re called for crossing the line too Boon. The first v leg " was a close reach; the second a broad reach ; and the third a dead beat to windward. The Columbia proved her superiority in " reaching," and sailing on the wind. The Shamrock rounded the first mark 728 ec ahead. On the second leg tbo Columbia gained 24sec. The Shamrock stood off on the starboard tack, allowing the Columbia the windward berth. The Columbia exhibited superior " pointing," and soon drew ahead. Captain Sycamore, failing to " blanket," followed "in the Columbia's wake, the latter winning by 78sec (or 215 sec, including time allowance and the difference of start).
