STRATFORD NEWS.
FROM OUR RESIDENT AGENT.]
Apiur. 2vd. — No time has hjen lost in making a start with tho railway works, a strong ijang of men being si work yester day in C"lu-strecjt. The Riile Volunteers arc going into camp at the racecource for a week. Tho Defence Department had no tents available (it is to be feared a good many other things would be found wanting in time of need . but Captain Malone was not to be baulked, and the tents will bo found locally. Much speculation is indulged in as to the C2nsus results. By how many will Hawera boat us this timo ? Five years ago we were about 500 behind, but we have certainly grown faster than our rival, and we don't expect to be distanced so completely. Hawera will have to show well over the 2000 to maintain her place as the second town of Taranaki.
A sign of advancement that has passed almcst unnoticed amid recent events is tbe appointment of a civilian Clerk of the Court. It is not a whit too soon, for their are police du'.ies proper that should fully occupy the time of our two constables.
