* THE MARCHING COMPETITION. I VBR PRBSS ASSOCIATION. | Waxoanui, March 15. — At the Band Contest the marching competition was witnessed by a large crowd. Results: — Wanganui Garrison, music 76, marching 288; total, 364. Woodville, music 66, marching 269; total 335; New Plymouth, music 66, marching 265, total, 331. Palj merston North, music 66, marching 259; total. 325. Magterton, music 74, marching, 248; total, 322. Petone, music 75, marching 244; total, 319. The contest was concluded to-night. The result of the championship is: — Wanganui 375, Masterton (disqualified) 355, Petone 317, New Plymouth 3 6, Paltnerston 305, Woodville 288. Alto geter the contest was most successful. The following is from the Wanganui Chronicle's report on the playing of the New Plymouth City Band in the test selection on Thursday night : — Allegro nssai. Attack fair, tempo good, tone fair. Bar 20 wrong note cornets. Larghetta. This movement opened well, though the cornets were rather thin in tone. The attack at B was poor. The semi- quaver was not heard. At 16 the trombones anticipated the semi quaver. 18 — 19 filso ragged. General conception not bad. Allegro marziale wrong, not basses, bar 15 otherwise good up to the cadoaza, which would bear improvement. Largo. Tempo rather fast. Euphonium playing fairly well. Accompaniment not so good. Morendo not observed. The soprano in trouble at 11. Tune not steady here. Cornet semi-quavers at 17 not distinct. Sforzando at 21 not observed. At 24 semi-quavers taken with a burst not crescendo. Attack of soprano and euphonium not together at 27. Moderato. Started out of tune. Cornet broke on top Aat 4 and 8. Ensemble fairly good 20. Top A again. — Slurred and tongued notes in cadenza not distinguished. Largo. Same difficulty with the accompaniment as already referred to. Solo horn clips notes, and some times articulates indistinctly. Accompaniment poor from 18 — 22. Third cornet pushes his notes 25 — 27. Finale. Accompaniment not well balanced. Cornet and trombone fair, Style not martial enough. This Band promises well. New to contest work, it hag shown great pluok in coming 100 miles to majie. its debut, and I prophesy a decent place in the list, when the numbers are up, as our Manawatu friends say. In the marching contest th.3 City Band secured third place. The possible ■ score was 300, vie., 100 each for inspection, cleanliness of instruments, and drill, .out of which, it will be seen, the winning band macle 288 :— The Binds score wan : —Inspection, 90; cleanliness of instruments, 94; drill penal- ! ties — forming march order to, paces 2, ; time 0, marching while playing 10, counter-marching 0, marching in file 5, total 19, leaving 81 points to the oredit of the band out of a maximum 10C for drill. Aggregate— 9o, 84, 81—265 In the E flat, soprano cornets, W. Nichols was third with 80 points; in the emphonium F, Newall was fifth with 73? and in the B flat baritone H. Flatt was | sixth with 76 points. The Band contest was concluded on Friday night, when the second test pieoe was played. The members of the City Band will return home this evening. j

At the Harbour Board meeting on Friday a letter watt read from tho UnderSecretary of the Lands and Survey Do- 1 partmont stating that the Railway Department could not see its way to co itribute to the cost of repairing the breakwater road. This waa in refereqeg to a promise made by tho Minister of La,nds that he would see to the matter. It was decided 4o communicate again with the Hon. Mr Duncan.
