Sir Andrew, Clarke, Agent - General for Victoria,* is urging the Colonial office to represent to the French Government the unfairness of the land acquisition and trading by the French at the New Hebrides. A Reuter's despatch announces that the wholesale business quarter of Montreal was destroyed by fire, including the Board of Trade buildings. The damage is estimated at five million dollars. Received January 29, 9.33 a.m. A RUSSIAN PROTEST AGAINST . BRITISH ACTION. London, January 25. The warship Plover, which was seat to the Elliot and Blonde Islands to suppress pirates, captured a number of junks. Admiral Aiexieff protested against the action as unwarrantable as the islands belonged to Russia. Admiral Seymour has referred the matter to the Home Go- , vernment. THE EASTERN EXTENSION COMPANY'S CONCESSION. The Victorian Governwent has asked Mr Chambeilain if he considers the proposed concession to the Eastern Extension Cable Co. is unfair to the Pacific cable.
